Scripture: Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
I was reading a devotional that asked the question, “How many mornings have we stood in our closets, looking hopelessly at its overstuffed contents and thinking we have nothing to wear?” The question convicted me. I, too, want to leave the house looking cute, pretty or fabulous. Accessories are important for a professional look.
Paul’s letter to the Colossians reminds us that we can clothe ourselves with compassion, love, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. These attributes help us to walk upright and treat others right. The only accessory that compliments everything is love. When we put on love, we are sought after by people, because God’s light will shine brighter. Love cannot be purchased with money. Jesus paid the cost in full at Calvary.
When you ask Christ to help us love others, Christ clothes us with the beautiful garment of love, which draws others. Love, as Donald Lawrence would say, your gift, looks good on you!
Lord, teach me how to love others, and myself, in a greater and fuller way. Help me to accessorize daily by putting on Love that attract others to You. Amen.
